Call for Board of Directors

As our June AGM approaches, a number of board members are coming to the end of their terms and the Laidlaw Foundation is looking to fill the seats of several outgoing board members.

We are looking for individuals whose skills, passion, and experience will align with the current focus, our mission, vision and values and the strategic goals outlined in our current Strategic Plan.

The Board of Directors provides strategic leadership, governance, oversees the operational and financial performance of the Foundation’ endowment, grantmaking, and assesses the Board’s own effectiveness. Our Board Members serve on several committees, including Finance & Audit, Investment, Governance, and Granting.

Expected Commitment from Board Members:

  • Attend quarterly Board meetings (3 hours/each) and 1-2 weekend Board retreats a year
  • Attend June Annual General Meeting
  • Able to commit the time and resources to serve on the Board
  • Actively participate on at least one Board Committee
  • Represent Laidlaw Foundation in the community


Term begins June 2018 and have the ability to serve for a minimum of one (1) year and eligible for re-election at the annual general meeting for up to 6 consecutive years.

Nomination Committee is particularly interested in candidates with the following knowledge, experience, and expertise:

  • Indigenous engagement
  • Impact Investing
  • Governance and strategic planning
  • Finance and Audit experience
  • Reflecting the Golden Horseshoe
  • Young people


  • Commitment to Laidlaw Foundation’s’ Mission, Vision and Values and has an appreciation of youth
  • Personal commitment to devote the time necessary to perform the responsibilities of a Board member
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills
  • Non-profit board experience is preferred
  • Previous experience with Laidlaw Foundation is considered an asset.

  • All applications and résumé / CV’s will be reviewed by the Nominations Committee; selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with the Recruitment Committee
  • The Recruitment Committee will make recommendations for each open board position to the full Board in May 2018.
