Working Rigorously With Stories: Introducing the Impact Story Tool

Discover the Impact Story Tool for rigorous program evaluation. Collect and analyze beneficiary stories effectively, enhancing the credibility of qualitative data.

By Benita Williams and Taonga Chilalika

This document introduces the ‘Impact Story Tool,’ a structured one-page form designed for rigorously collecting and analyzing beneficiary stories in program evaluation. It outlines a three-step process: unpacking the change (what, who, why beneficial, and how the intervention contributed), categorizing the change (expected or unexpected), and attributing the change to the intervention.

The tool facilitates verification and can be analyzed qualitatively (themes) or quantitatively (using scoring guides/rubrics), thereby addressing concerns about story subjectivity.

A case study on the South African Extraordinary Schools Coalition (SAESC) demonstrates its practical application, highlighting its effectiveness in capturing diverse impacts and ensuring beneficiary voices are heard, while also emphasizing the importance of combining it with other data sources.
